Eoghan Harris wrote a very strong article in the Sunday Independent yesterday. While I don’t agree with much of what Eoghan writes (particularly about Fianna Fail and Brian Cowen) he can cut through the consensus very quickly and prod us all into new thinking.
The thrust of his article yesterday was that we are in a revolutionary situation or a ‘structural crisis where there are no precedents’. In this Eoghan is completely correct. Any objective analysis of the financial
situation and it’s impact on the real economy would reach the same conclusion.
He argues that the past is another country in helping the political system to make decisions. Speed is also of the essence. I agree with much of this. As I have said before, I believe there is a strong protest of violent
protests on our streets before the end of this year. So what should be done? Firstly, get rid of the cosy cartel running our country.
Secondly, be honest with the people, for example a levy is a tax.
Thirdly, the only focus of state action should be on the creation of jobs and more jobs now and in the future. For example do you know how many kids graduated with a leaving cert in science in 2008?
None. This is what we need to change.
