Improving Dublin’s Public Transport – Paschal’s Annual Report 07/08

1st September, 2008

In the Last Year As Fine Gael Seanad Transport Spokesperson I have:-

Improved legislation for new Dublin Transport Authority

I secured 3 major changes to law setting up the new body to organise transport for Dublin. This made me the first Opposition member of the new Seanad to have changes accepted on any legislation. These changes will:-

  • Place the commuter or pedestrian at the centre of transport policy.
  • Require new policies to encourage more walking and cycling.
  • Clarify the role of the DTA as both a transport regulator and provider.

Campaigned on Metro North

As a member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee I have raised priorities regarding the tunnel route, station location and construction. I also commissioned an independent report to re-examine the cost and benefits of this project. This report was used in the Seanad and media to better evaluate Metro North.

Worked for better local train services

Residents need better train services into the Broombridge and Ashtown stations. I have organised two public meetings with local residents and representatives of Iarnrod Eirrean.  Though the Oireachtas Transport Committee I have raised this issue with Iarnrod Eireann management to agree a plan to improve services.

Campaigned for new Luas services

We need new Luas lines to serve a growing population and new developments such as the new DIT Grangegorman. I used the Freedom of Information Act to campaign on this Luas extension to press for it’s delivery. The Department of Transport have announced their plan to extend Luas Line D to Liffey Junction in Cabra.

Priorities For Next Year:

  • Introduce new law on Sustainable Transport Strategies.
  • Make sure Metro North is delivered well and that it deals with local needs.
  • Campaign for quick delivery of new Luas line and Improvement of local train services and stations.
