EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT GRANTS 2012/13

Local students seeking to further their education throughout the coming year can now apply for educational support grants from the Docklands Community Trust. The grants will be administered on behalf of the Trust by the Local Employment Services on Amiens Street. In order to qualify for a grant, applicants must live in the Docklands area and be accepted for an accredited and recognised course. Other criteria relate to social welfare payments and income levels. If you want more information on this grant get in touch with me and I’ll answer any questions that you might have. Alternatively, you can call into Local Employment Services Office on Amiens Street and speak with Aoife Kerrigan who will provide you with any further assistance which you may require.

IMPROVED LOCAL CYCLE FACILITIES

The Rail Procurement Agency has informed me that it has secured funding for the provision of high specification cycle facilities at the LUAS stop at Spencer Dock. This project forms part of the Government’s plans to improve facilities for users of public transport. The associated works are expected to begin shortly and I understand that it is hoped to conclude them within a three month time-scale. Councillor Ray McAdam and I very much welcome these improvements for local cyclists at the Spencer Dock LUAS stop. Should there be any difficulties throughout the period of works, please let either one of us so that we can pursue the matter with the RPA and the contractor in charge of the works.

DUBLIN TALL SHIPS FESTIVAL – AUGUST 2012

As you are no doubt aware, the Tall Ships Festival is taking place in Dublin between August 23rd and 26th. The vast majority of events associated with the festival will be taking place within or near the East Wall and North Wall communities. The different events are expected to draw huge crowds to the area which will undoubtedly impact the local community. Both Councillor Ray McAdam and I have been working with the City Council in respect of developing an effective Traffic and Waste Management Plans so that local residents are not needlessly impacted upon in a negative way. An Event Licence was submitted last month and plans are being finalised for the compilation of detailed traffic, pedestrian and stewarding plans for what promises to be an exciting few days at the end of August.
