SMALL AREA POLICING UPDATE & OPERATION SPIRE CONTINUES

11th April, 2014

On Wednesday morning, I met Chief Superintendent to discuss the success of the Small Area Policing plan that his team has rolled out across the Inner City and Cabra. Since mid-January, officers from the Bridewell, Mountjoy and Store Stations have been involved in the roll-out of this new approach to policing. Every district from Infirmary Road to East Wall and from the Quays to Cabra has been sub-divided into smaller areas with Community Gardai assigned to each new sector. This plan has seen Guards call to homes within their ‘patch’, introduce themselves and discuss with residents and householders the issues that affect them.

A lot of hard work and significant training has gone into developing this new policing approach. It is one that I very much welcome as it is designed to ensure the Gardai respond more efficiently to the policing challenges in local communities by working with local communities. The Chief Superintendent also provided me with a brief update on Operation Spire, which his officers have put in place along O’Connell Street. This has involved a highly visible presence along O’Connell Street which has yielded some success to date. He assured me that this Operation will be in place for the foreseeable future.

This is all typical of the great work that An Garda Siochana does in Dublin Central.
