Minister Donohoe launches Dublin Bus’ newest ‘Spook-tacular’ Ghostbus in time for Halloween

27th October, 2014

The world’s first custom built Ghostbus and first Ghostbus tour has a new addition to its fleet after its oldest member was retired earlier this year, ending 42 years of service to Dublin Bus. The Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Mr. Paschal Donohoe TD,yesterday (Sunday) launched a brand new custom built Ghostbus that will take Dubliners and tourists alike on a thrilling ride, tracing Dublin’s creepiest mysteries this Halloween weekend.

The Ghostbus Tour, originally created and designed by Dan O’Donoghue (Ghostbus Tours Ltd) first departed Dublin Bus headquarters in 1998 and since then 6,550 tours have taken place. Over the years the Ghostbus has travelled 79,000 km with 140,000 people taking a ride on the Ghostbus ‘dark side’ since the tour was initiated.

Unsurprisingly, October sees the most visitors to the Ghostbus and the Ghostbus will travel a massive 400 kilometres this month alone. Thenew Ghostbus will drive guests into their nightmares, taking in some of Dublin’s most haunting sights along the way. Guests are led through this ordeal by a sinister guide and driver, two men in tune with the afterlife, who will do their best to put guests at their unease. Designed to spook your imagination, the spine-tingling, nerve-racking Dublin Bus Ghostbus Tour is a journey of hair-raising frights never to be forgotten.

The tour creeps through Dublin’s darkened streets taking in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, where a certain Dr. Clossey is still said to roam the corridors carrying a bucket of human entrails, then stopping at the Christchurch crypts, the scene of medieval torture, for a lesson in grave robbing and bodysnatching with a final visit to one of Dublin’s most unnerving cemeteries St. James graveyard. The Dublin Bus Ghostbus will spirit visitors away to a world of felons, fiends and phantoms for over two hours of hair-raising frights!

Minister Donohoe said: ‘The Ghostbus Tour is an exceptionally entertaining thing to do in Dublin, at any time of year. Not surprisingly, however, the Halloween period lends itself to a heightened interest in the tour, which takes people to some of the eeriest places in Dublin. Initiatives, like the Ghostbus Tour, offer a unique tourism experience for our overseas visitors who are looking for another side to the city, and a new insight for those living here who want to learn more about our capital’s past. The popularity of the tour is testament to the drivers and guides who do a fantastic job in alarming and amusing patrons in equal measure. I wish them every success for the future’.

Tours depart from Dublin Bus Headquarters on O’Connell Street and operate Monday to Thursday 8pm, Friday & Saturday 7pm & 9.30pm.
