The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, and Fine Gael TD for Dublin Central, Paschal Donohoe, has this afternoon (Tuesday) welcomed the announcement that the Government is to acquire the National Monument at Nos. 14-17 Moore Street in Dublin, saying that the future security of this historic building is fitting as we approach the centenary of the 1916 Rising.
Minister Donohoe said: ‘The issue of what was to happen in respect of these buildings has long been a matter of public interest and concern. As a location of extreme significance in our history, it is essential that the site is treated accordingly and that the National Monument’s future is safeguarded by being brought into public ownership’.
“The development of a 1916 Commemorative Centre on the site, as planned by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD, will ensure that the story of this period of our history can be told to those visiting Dublin and also to those living here who have an interest. It will also be a fitting tribute to those who fought for Irish freedom at that time and will ensure that a last tribute is made to them for the sacrifices they made for Ireland.”
Fine Gael’s north inner City Councillor, Ray McAdam said: ‘That the Government is to acquire this monument and develop it so that it can be given the prominence it deserves is great news. What was to happen to Nos. 14-17 Moore Street has been an issue of contention for many years and the fact that Government is stepping in where Dublin City Council has failed demonstrates Fine Gael and Labour’s commitment to doing the right thing in this regard. I am very pleased that today’s announcement finally brings the matter to a close, which I know will be welcomed by those who have campaigned for solution to be found for many years’.
