2nd May, 2017

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe TD, today (Tuesday) joined Minister for Education & Skills, Richard Bruton T.D., to open a new extension to Mount Carmel Secondary School, Kings Inn Street, Dublin 1.

The Department of Education and Skills has provided over €950,000 to the school for the construction of a new state of art extension which will consist of 5 classrooms, including a Music Room.

Enrolment in the school has increased by 50% increase in last 10 years. Mount Carmel is a multi-cultural Catholic school for girls with 32 different nationalities enrolled. A significant proportion of pupils are Polish, Romanian and Lithuanian students.  38% of the students were born outside Ireland. It is the oldest secondary school in Dublin city centre.

Minister Bruton said:

“I was delighted to visit Mount Carmel Secondary School on Kings Inn Street today to open their new extension. Through the Action Plan for Education, which aims to make the Irish education and training service the best in Europe, we are investing hundreds of millions to provide thousands of new school places. Students in the north inner city will now greatly benefit from these new state of the art facilities.”

Minister Donohoe said:

“This investment will provide better facilities for the students of Mount Carmel, a school with a great heritage that is now an example of the multi-cultural vibrancy of our city. Increased capital investment in schools around the country is a key part of the Government’s Capital Plan, which I am currently reviewing and will update later in the year”.
