Doing the Lisbon Referendum Earlier

7th February, 2009

A chorus is beginning to develop around re-running the Lisbon Treaty earlier than October. Some are suggesting June. A very cogent example of this case is from Stephen Collins in the Irish Times today. I think the Lisbon Treaty is a massive challenge and opportunity for our country. I really want to do all I possibly can to campaign for it’s passage.

That said I would not support a June referendum for two reasons. Firstly, the people need to have an opportunity to express their anger with the Government first. Secondly, the guarantees on the many sensitive issues just will not be ready and adequately examined and communicated by then.

We need to make sure that haste is not made quickly and we don’t end upside-lining our country completely from Europe.
