Donohoe to raise rising LUAS anti-social behaviour with Dempsey

15th January, 2010

Reports that the level of anti-social behaviour has doubled on the LUAS in the last two years will be raised directly with the Transport Minister by Fine Gael Seanad Transport Spokesman Paschal Donohoe.

“I am very concerned at reports of a 100% increase in anti-social behaviour on the two LUAS lines between 2007 and 2008. I will be raising this matter directly with Transport Minister Noel Dempsey and asking him to make a statement on the matter.

“I welcome the fact that security has been increased on both lines. However, LUAS drivers have raised serious concerns about their own safety with Fine Gael. Some of these concerns have been addressed, but outstanding issues remain.

“LUAS is a very profitable franchise for operators Veolia and we must ensure that security is watertight. Veolia may want to consider making a contribution to Garda overtime in order to raise security levels and protect passengers.

“Dublin’s LUAS is a proven transport model which is likely to be extended even further across the city in future. But there is no doubt that passengers and drivers are potentially very vulnerable. It is therefore vital that security and ASB issues are dealt with at an early stage.”
