Donohoe welcomes green light for Luas link-up

3rd August, 2012

Fine Gael Dublin Central Deputy, Paschal Donohoe, has today (Friday) welcomed the decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant a Railway Order which will see the Luas link-up, in the form of the of the Luas BXD line, getting the go ahead for construction.

“The construction of the Luas BXD line will be a fantastic addition to Dublin’s transport infrastructure. Since the inception of the Luas, the fact that the Red and the Green lines did not meet up was a real source of bewilderment. The green light given today by An Bord Pleanála means that plans for advance works and tendering can now be progressed, ensuring the delivery of a joined up network for the people of Dublin and beyond.

“The extension of the Luas into the north inner city, with a stop planned at the new DIT campus in Grangegorman, will act as a major boost to the area. It will make getting to and from the campus significantly easier for students, irrespective of where they are travelling from, making DIT an even more attractive option. These two initiatives are set to breathe new life into the heart of Dublin 7, reinvigorating and reviving the entire area.

“The Luas BXD will give Dublin what every other modern city has had for years; an integrated rail network. It will make getting from one part of Dublin to the other infinitely easier, saving Dublin commuters time and hassle.

“Every effort must now be made to ensure that value for money is achieved during the construction phase and that works are carried out with a minimum of disruption.

“I am delighted that despite our economic constraints, the money has been made available for this extremely worthwhile project which will modernise our transport infrastructure and change the face of Dublin city travel.”
