Kenny appoints Senator Paschal Donohoe as Chairman of Oireachtas Lisbon Committee

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny, TD, has announced the appointment of Senator Paschal Donohoe as Chairperson of the new Oireachtas sub-Committee to examine Ireland’s role in the European Union following the Lisbon Treaty referendum. The Committee will sit for eight weeks.

This All-Party Committee will report to the Joint Committee on European Affairs and will work intensively over the coming two months to debate the issues that arose during the referendum campaign and will look at ways to improve public understanding of European issues.

Commenting on Senator Donohoe’s appointment, the Fine Gael Leader said:

“I am confident that Paschal Donohoe will do an excellent job as Chairperson of this special Oireachtas Committee on Ireland’s role in the European Union.  He is a very able and energetic senator and his considerable skills will be of great benefit to the very important work on this Committee.

“This Committee has a challenging remit in a very short timeframe and I know that Senator Donohoe will lead it with great commitment and fairness. Its work will have an important bearing on the decision to be taken ultimately regarding Ireland’s future approach to the Lisbon Treaty.”

Fine Gael Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Billy Timmins, TD, and European Spokesperson, Lucinda Creighton, TD, will represent the Party on the Committee.
