Today in the Oireachtas

The Oireachtas starts on a Tuesday afternoon each sitting week. It is a combination of committees and plenary sessions in both the Dail and Seanad. The afternoon started with a FG Senators Meeting where we get ready for the business of the week. We decide what are the key political points for the week and […]

How many accountants does it take to spend €29 billion of your money

The Departments of Social & Family Affairs, Health and Education are predicted to spend €29 billion this year. Yet the three Departments have just eight accountants between them. It’s no wonder that the Government has a history of wasting so much taxpayers’ money, and failing to provide a decent public service, when its biggest spending Departments have so little oversight. The Late Late Show, the Daily Mail and me

The headline on the front page of the Daily Mail today read ‘Late Late in sexism row over Senator’. Amazingly the whole saga has resulted in my bagging my second ever front page story. An update from Washington

Explaining what our European institutions do is at the heart of much of the support or lack of support for Europe. Institutions, of course, rely on individuals to do this. John Bruton, the EU Ambassador to America does a brilliant job of this in his: WEEKLY MESSAGES. I am going to post each of them on […]

Could the Dail learn from the Seanad?

Primetime and the Pat Kenny show have each run pieces on whether the Seanad should be abolished. In fairness, both of these shows ran balanced and informative discussions. We got a fair crack of the whip in each debate. A counter view that I would argue is whether the Seanad could teach the rest of the Oireachtas a […]

EU Affairs Committee Meeting

Attended a meeting of this committee today. Very interesting as it covered off a lot of material. In the private session we reviewed reports on the European economic recovery plan, a recent visit to Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina and a meeting with our Northern Ireland counterparts.
