Opening of Sean O’Casey Centre, East Wall.

I attended the opening of the new community centre in East Wall yesterday.  This centre has mostly been funded by the Dublin Docklands Authority. I enjoy events like this so much more as they stand out against the grimness of everything else. This project was led by local residents and it is a testament […]

Doing the Lisbon Referendum Earlier

A chorus is beginning to develop around re-running the Lisbon Treaty earlier than October. Some are suggesting June. A very cogent example of this case is from Stephen Collins in the Irish Times today. I think the Lisbon Treaty is a massive challenge and opportunity for our country. I really want to do all […]

When Markets Collide

This is the name of a superb book which I’m reading late at night and early in the morning. The author is Mohamed El-Erian. The book has just won the Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year for 2008. It analyses the causes of the current global economic turmoil. The thesis of the book is in the title. […]

I will work with my colleague Fergus O’Dowd TD to have these […]

Update on Gaelscoil Bharra School Building

I raised again the situation with this local school with the Minister for Education. It is a disgrace that parents, pupils and teachers are still waiting for a clear plan as to when the school can move out of temporary buildings. Parents have set up a committee to make progress on this issue. I will […]

Snowbound commuter hell shows urgent need for emergency Dublin traffic plan – Donohoe

This was probably the worst recent congestion seen in the greater Dublin area. Thousands of motorists were stranded both inside and outside the city. The fact that it was caused by a light dusting of snow shows just how ill-prepared the city is for adverse weather conditions. In spite of repeated weather warnings, the city […]

Real risk of social unrest if the planned reforms to respond to the recession are not fair or not understood.

There is now the very real risk of social unrest if the planned reforms to respond to the recession are not fair or not understood. The risk is increased by the Taoiseach’s failure to acknowledge his own personal role in Ireland’s economic crisis, and to apologise to those whose lives are now in turmoil.
