The Minister for European Affairs, Paschal Donohoe T.D., has expressed his dismay and concern over reports that Twitter has been blocked in Turkey.
Speaking from Brussels, where he is attending the European Council with the Taoiseach, Minister Donohoe said:
“Internet freedom and the ability to communicate through any medium, including digital media, is a fundamental value which needs to be protected and respected, not restricted.
“Ireland firmly believes in the critical importance of unhindered access to the internet and the right of citizens to express their views through whatever means they choose. Any move to impose such restrictions is a breach of these rights and freedoms.
“I am deeply disappointed by reports of the blocking of Twitter by Prime Minister Erdoğan. The freedom to communicate is a fundamental EU value and, as such, is integral to the negotiations on enlargement. I am concerned that after recent progress in this area, these latest developments may represent a step backwards.
“We have been among the strongest supporters of Turkey’s EU reform and accession agenda and I would strongly encourage the Turkish authorities to reflect on their actions in light of their aspirations.”
