Minister Donohoe to chair his first meeting of the North South Ministerial Transport Council

5th November, 2014

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, will today (Wednesday) travel to Armagh to attend his first North South Ministerial Council (NSMC) Transport sectoral meeting, which he will also chair. The meeting, which is the 17th of its kind, will also be attended by the Minister for Regional Development (DRD) for the Northern Ireland Assembly (NIA), Danny Kennedy MLA; and the Minister of Environment for the NIA, Mark H Durkan, MLA.

Among the topics on the agenda are strategic transport priorities, major road projects, mutual recognition of penalty points, cycling and cross border greenways, vehicle and road user safety, EU matters and funding opportunities.

Speaking in advance of the meeting, Minister Donohoe said: ‘I am looking forward not only to attending my first NSMC Transport meeting in Northern Ireland but also to have the opportunity to chair the meeting and to further develop relations with my counterparts at Stormont’.

“These meetings are vital if we are to continue to identify transport related projects which we can cooperate on with real practical benefits for both Ireland and Northern Ireland.

“As our economy continues to develop, more and more people are returning to work. Identifying the challenges and opportunities ahead, such as the need to tackle congestion through the promotion of sustainable transport and the potential for cross border initiatives, that will enable enhanced growth into the future, and working together to deliver them stands to benefit us all.”

A joint Communiqué will be issued by the NSMC Secretariat after the meeting.
