Public urged to make views on transport plans for North Dublin known by Monday – Donohoe

16th January, 2015

Last chance to have your say on 6 shortlisted projects for the Fingal area before closing date of 5pm on January 19th

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, has today (Friday) urged members of the public with an interest in transport for the North Dublin area, to make their views known on the projects shortlisted by the National Transport Authority (NTA) to meet the future needs of the region before the closing date of Monday, 19th January at 5pm.

Last month, Minister Donohoe, together with the NTA, announced a shortlist of six project options that are being considered to meet the medium to long-term transportation needs of one of the fastest growing areas in the country; the Fingal/North Dublin area, encompassing the Swords/Dublin Airport to citycentre corridor.

The public is being asked for its views on the project it favours for the area and are being asked to make submissions to the NTA before next Monday.

The six proposed options, which will go ahead for more detailed evaluation before a final decision on a preferred option is made, include:

  • Two heavy rail options:

o   A DART link from Clongriffin to theAirport and Swords (Option HR2);

    • A DART link from the Maynooth Railway Line to the Airport and Swords via a tunnel under Glasnevin (Option HR8);
  • Two Luas/Metro options:

o   A Luas line from Cabra to the Airport and Swords via a tunnel under Glasnevin (Option LR3);

    • A Metro proposal from St. Stephen’s Green to the Airport and Swords (Option LR7);
  • One Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Option:
  • One Combination Option:
    • A combination of a number of proposed Bus Rapid Transit services (Option BRT 5); and
    • A combination of a DART link from Clongriffin to the Airport and a Luas line from Cabra to Swords (Option C1).

Minister Donohoe said; ‘As our economy continues to develop, we are seeing more people back at work and more cars on the road. A recent report by the NTA outlined that by 2023 there will be an additional 40,000 journeys being made into Dublin city centre each dayIf all of these journeys were to be made by private car, we would need to build 40 new multi-story car parks to cope. This is neither realistic nor desirable’.

“As one of the fastest growing regions in the country, the increase in travel across the Fingal/North Dublin area in the coming years will be significant as the population and economic activity grow. The time to plan for that growth is now so that the medium to long-term transport needs of this area can be adequately met and people can be facilitated in getting about their business.

“Last month, together with the NTA, I launched the first stage of the Fingal/North Dublin Transport Study with a view to determining the preferred transport project for the area. The public was asked to feed in to that process and to tell the NTA the project they prefer, as the users of the services to be delivered into the future.  That process will come to an end on Monday at 5pm and I urge those with an interest to review the material in relation to the six options and to submit their views to the NTA before that time.
