Samuel Beckett Bridge

12th December, 2009

The first day of use of the new Samuel Beckett Bridge has revealed limitations that must be addressed by Dublin City Council, according to Fine Gael Seanad Transport Spokesperson Senator Paschal Donohoe.

“I used the bridge myself for the first time this morning.  It’s a beautiful structure that will greatly enrich this part of Dublin.

“However it’s not just there to look great.  The bridge is designed to divert traffic away from the city centre bridges.

“The fact that cars cannot turn left onto the bridge when coming from the O2 village or the Port Tunnel is very surprising.  This forces these cars back into the city centre, the very thing this bridge was meant to avoid.

“Dublin City Council must clarify why this limitation is in place and take  steps to review it.  This bridge must do more than look beautiful.  It must fit into a strategic traffic plan for the city, and these early limitations are worying.”
