Better Regulation for Rented Homes
More must be done for local residents and tenants to ensure that rental properties are better maintained. I published an analysis showing that 1 in 5 rental properties are not meeting basic legal standards. My work also showed that only 36 legal actions were taken in 2006 for poor rental conditions.
I continually raised this issue in the Seanad leading to substantial media coverage including a Primetime Investigation. I organised a public meeting in Stoneybatter with representatives in the rental sector. I have pressed the government to update rental regulations and change how they are enforced.
For next year:
- Push the Government for new rental regulation.
- Work with local residents and associations on problem properties.
