The Polls

1st March, 2010

The recent political tumult that exercised so many of us in the Leinster House village appears to have had absolutely no impact on the electorate.

There is a salutary lesson for us all here. Far too often, the media becomes convinced that its own personality-driven agenda is the people’s agenda. It also eyes those of us who beg to have the focus on policies with a mix of suspicion and contempt. And yet, despite the resignations of four senior politicians in the space of two weeks, support for all the political parties has remained the same. The next election is, at most, two years away. It may come much sooner than that.

People are not concerned about the plight of individual politicians. All they care about is the plight of themselves and their families. It shouldn’t surprise us that this is the only game in town.
