The start of another week

8th February, 2011

The campaign gets weirder and weirder. The latest strange occurrence was the reaction of some to Fine Gael’s proposals to help the “negative equity generation”.The cost of the Government’s blank cheque to the banks could be as high as €100 billion. One hundred thousand million euro. And yet, the FG proposal to spend €120m on those with large mortgages and low home values has been seized upon by some as irresponsible. I wonder if those people have any idea at all of what it is like to be a middle income earner in this. country.

More strangeness comes today with Fianna Fail’s proposal on political reform. The party that has governed Ireland for 21 of the last 24 years is only now coming round to the idea of change. If it weren’t so serious, it would be funny.
