“Bertie Ahern and St Luke’s have long dominated the Dublin Central constituency. His focus on constituency work and constant canvassing set a high benchmark for his colleagues and rivals.
“He made a significant contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, building on the work of his predecessors. However, his overall legacy to Ireland is very mixed.
“Bertie Ahern’s departure now creates an opening for the election of new blood to Dáil Éireann. Fine Gael has built up a new organisation in Dublin Central, which has proved its worth in the local elections and the recent by-election.
“Fine Gael is now confident of gaining a seat in the constituency. I hope to gain the support of the people of Dublin Central to make this happen.”
