Did anybody walk out of last night’s Parliamentary Party meeting?

1st April, 2009

This was the question asked of me by Rachel English last night on The Late Debate on RTE1. The answer , of course, was No.

We need to put a sense of perspective on these things. Politics is an emotional game. It is high stakes. To crudely paraphrase the poem ‘dreams are stamped on and nobody ever threads softly’ all of the time in politics. I have tough meetings like this on a regular basis. What has now happened is that Fine Gael’s profile has dramatically increased. An event that would not have even been commented on 12 months ago is now a national news story.

President Sakorzy considering a walk out of the G20 summit is news. Raised voices at a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting is news too. All good stuff.
