Minister Donohoe announces appointment of Mr. John Hogan as Secretary General of the Department of Finance

The Government has today (18th May 2021) appointed Mr. John Hogan as Secretary General of the Department of Finance.

 

Mr Hogan is currently the Assistant Secretary General with responsibility for Tax Policy Division in the Department of Finance. He was previously Assistant Secretary General with responsibility for Banking Policy in the Financial Services Division of the Department. Throughout his career, Mr Hogan has worked in a number of Government Departments and was based in Brussels for a number of years as Financial Services Counsellor in the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the European Union.

 

Minister Donohoe said:

“I am pleased to announce that today the Government has appointed John Hogan to the important role of Secretary General in the Department of Finance. The Department has been central to the Government’s response to COVID-19 and will play a critical part in the economic recovery ahead. John brings a wealth of experience to this role and I looking forward to continuing to work with him in the period ahead.”

 

Mr Hogan will take up the position from 8th of June and will become the 18th head of the Department since it was established in 1922.

The post in the Department of Finance is Secretary General Level I. The post does not come within the remit of TLAC and arrangements for the filling of the post are a matter for the Government. Before a decision is taken by Government on this appointment, all suitable officers in the civil service are considered.
