25th June, 2024

Speaking this morning following the Government announcement that Minister Michael McGrath is to be nominated as Ireland’s next EU Commissioner, Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform, Paschal Donohoe said: ‘I am very pleased for Michael that he is to go forward as our next Commissioner. This is good news for Europe and Ireland. I have worked exceptionally closely with Michael since 2016 and have always had an excellent working relationship with him’.

“Michael has been an exemplary colleague, an excellent Minister both for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform and, I have no doubt, that he will make an outstanding Commissioner, representing Ireland at EU level.  A very exciting time lies ahead for Michael, and his family, as he takes up this new role and he has my full support in doing so.”

“I would also like to offer heartfelt congratulations to Deputy Jack Chambers as he assumes the role of Minister for Finance. It is an incredible opportunity for him and I look forward to working with him to deliver a Budget that ensures continued investment for our people and keeps us on a steady path in the years ahead.”
